"Name-Calling bar owner is blowing smoke" (January 2002, p.3)
A thank you to City Councillor Alex Cullen for reminding both his
constituency and Edgar Mitchell, owner of the Duke of Somerset and PUBCO
member, that the smoke-free bylaw is good for the public's health, the
business community's health, and the city's financial health. The smoke-free
by-law is already boosting our local hospitality sector and it will save our
local hospitals millions of dollars in the future.
Ottawa City Council, the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air
Conditioning Engineer (ASHRAE), and countless businesses have all rejected
designated smoking rooms and so-called "ventilation solutions" for one
simple reason: they don't work!
Businesses that are complying with the by-law are doing well - just as
predicted. Yet, PUBCO members keep digging themselves a deeper grave. They
claim to be in the hospitality industry, yet they have outdone themselves in
their attempts to be inhospitable to 80% of the market (i.e. non-smokers).
It's time the public began to question where these "working class places"
are getting all of the money to pay for expensive lawsuits, a sophisticated
website, public relations advice, etc...
Thanks, Councillor Cullen, for setting the record straight and for clearing
the air of PUBCO's nonsense.
